Why is vaginal cosmetic surgery important for women?

international survey findsVaginal surgery ‘world’s fastest-growing cosmetic procedure. A growing number of women around the world are going under the knife to change the appearance of their reproductive organs, plastic surgeons have said. In 2016, 45 per cent more labiaplasty procedures were carried out than in 2015, according to data gathered by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Concerns about the way your vagina looks or feels are surprisingly common, especially as natural life events such as childbirth and ageing can fundamentally change the appearance of the vagina in an adverse fashion. The good news is that surgery can improve appearance, sensation and function of your vagina, providing safe and effective relief from the symptoms and worry that these conditions can cause. Typical issues raised include:

lack of confidence

Losing sex

urinary incontinence

Frequent urination Vaginal beauty operation

Vaginal rejuvenation is also known as vaginoplasty. These are big words, but the definition is clear and simple. It is a form of reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic procedure that is performed on the vaginal canal, the mucous membrane, and other vulvo-vaginal structures of the uterus. Vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty procedure aims to “tighten up” a vagina that’s become slack or loose from vaginal childbirth or aging. Vagainal rejuvenation not only refers to the internal muscles, but it also refers to the external skin and tissue that surround it.

Reasons for increased Vaginal beauty operation

Both patient interest in and performance of cosmetic genital procedures have increased during the past decade. Potential Reasons for Increased Interest in Genital Cosmetic Surgery:

  • better view of the external genitalia for both women and their partners. Women experience more confidence in their sexual partner.
  • The perception of having aesthetically inferior external genitalia, augmented by the internet, online pornography, and other media sources, may drive women to seek surgical alteration . Women who explore cosmetic surgery often turn to internet searches.
  • Of equal importance are marketing claims that genital cosmetic surgery treats cosmetic and functional issues and enhances sexual satisfaction.

Types of Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery

Labiaplasty: This involves surgery to the labia minora (inner lips) and less frequently, the labia majora(outer lips).  Labiaplasty of the labia minora is the most commonly performed GCS procedure. It generally involves reducing the size of the inner lips so they do not protrude below the outer lips. It is also used to correct asymmetry of the lips, where one lip is significantly different in size/length to the other.

Vaginoplasty: This involves tightening the inside of the vagina and the vaginal opening by removing excess tissue from the vaginal lining. It effectively results in a vagina with a smaller diameter. Vaginoplasty is often promoted as a solution for women who have experienced a loss of vaginal tone due to childbirth. It is also referred to as ‘vaginal rejuvenation’.

Hymenoplasty: This procedure reconstructs the hymen (the thin membrane of skin that partially covers the vaginal entrance in a virgin). The edges of the torn hymen are reconnected so that when sexual intercourse takes place the membrane will tear and bleed. While hymenoplasty is predominantly performed for religious or cultural reasons.

Clitoral hood reduction: This procedure involves reducing the hood of skin which surrounds the clitoris, exposing the glans (or head) of the clitoris that lies underneath. A clitoral hood reduction is aimed at providing more stimulation, therefore, heightening a woman’s sexual pleasure.
