What is laser vaginal rejuvenation “Mona Lisa Touch” therapy?
Laser vaginal rejuvenation describes the latest advancement in medicine to treat vaginal symptoms that occur as a result of childbirth, menopause, radiation and chemotherapy post cancer, excess weight loss (>10kg) and for those suffering sexual discomfort. It can also be used on asymptomatic women to help tighten the vaginal walls and for these women has caught the name “designer vagina”. This treatment is virtually painless (most women just feel a tingle or vibration) and takes about 10minutes. Our doctor has been treating women for 20years who suffer from vaginal symptoms. In addition, she has been performing laser treatment for nearly the same time. Due to her vast experience in both areas, it became almost a must that she should be able to offer the service from our state of the art Day Hospital to ensure that the highest in medical standards are kept at all times. Be assured that our caring all female staff understand your possible distress, or embarrassment and may have even had the treatment themselves.

How does it work?
The Mona Lisa Touch laser rejuvenates the vagina by destroying the old fragile vaginal walls and forcing the body to make new tighter collagen which improves blood flow to the area.
Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
The experience of the operator makes this a very safe procedure. In addition, it is carried out in our Day Hospital at no additional expense to our patients to ensure the highest in safety standards. The doctor simply has to clean the area and then insert the probe. She will then segmentally treat the entire vaginal wall as she slowly removes the probe. The whole process only takes a few minutes and with most women experiencing minimal or no discomfort. add additional treatments as they begin to feel better. Our doctor will help tailor to your specific needs. Many patients feel improvements within 2 weeks, but the real effects don’t start until after 6 weeks from the initial treatment. That’s when the body really begins its collagenation process.
Do I need any special preparation?
Women undergoing laser vagina rejuvenation treatment should cease any creams and pessaries a week prior to treatment and not resume until after all treatments have finished. It may be possible that for some women that these creams are no longer needed. Patients should also refrain from sex the night before the treatments. There should be no active vaginal infection at the time of treatment. Women who are still menstruating should aim for treatment 1 week after their periods. All women should ensure that they are up-to-date with their pap smears and breast checks. Contraindications to vaginal laser rejuvenation include active abnormal cells or cancers (it will
however not make cancer cells grow faster if present), active lesions from skin conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus and lichen sclerosis in the area at the time of the treatment. At present there is research being conducted that uses the laser to treat such skin conditions! Women who have atrophy post chemo and radiation therapy should wait 6 months before having vaginal laser therapy.
Full recovery is usually within 3 to 5 days after the treatment and is usually asymptomatic. Care should be taken by not soaking in water or pools, avoiding douches and any chemical irritants. In addition, women should refrain from sex during recovery and strenuous physical activity. They should wear underwear that allows the area to breathe. Women undergoing vulval treatments will take up to 10 days to fully heal and should proceed with the
same aftercare. They may apply emollients to the area as recommended by the doctor.
