Labiaplasty is surgery to remove excess tissue from the labia on the outside of the vagina. It can be done for cosmetic reasons or to treat physical discomfort due to enlarged labia. Research shows that people find more self-esteem after labiaplasty and enjoy more sexual intercourse. As people tend to practice labiaplasty, many questions arise about them. Here are some of the most common questions to ask.
- How soon may I have sex after surgery?
We ask that you abstain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for 6 weeks to ensure the best aesthetic results and reduce the risk of infection.
- Should I get anesthesia for Labiaplasty?
There are three options for anesthesia with labiaplasty: local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia. The first two can be done in a doctor’s office. The third requires an operating room.
- Will there be scarring from Labiaplasty?
The kind of tissues and skin cells, which are usually reduced, should not significantly scar, just like found in other areas of the body system, for instance, the facial skin. Our technique is basically to work on some part of the mucosa, which is similar to the tissues inside your mouth area, and it should not relatively scar. Moreover, Dr. Saffarzadeh does labiaplasty by laser method as a special technique that should not make an obvious scar mark.
- How long does it take to see the real result after the labiaplasty?
Many labiaplasty patients are concerned with how long it will take them to look great after surgery. The truest answer to that question is that it will take months, because some degree of swelling is present for 6 (and sometimes more) months. Bruising takes time to resolve. Incisions need to heal. Fluid needs to be reabsorbed slowly by your body. However, that does not mean that you will not look very good, even very soon after your surgery. If you are compliant with your icing and pelvic elevation, having a beautiful result is possible even a few days after surgery.
- Do You Lose Sensation with Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is designed to reshape and/or reduce the size of the inner and/or outer vaginal lips. The procedure removes excess labial tissue in these areas but does not affect the nerves that are responsible for sensitivity. Following labiaplasty, patients may experience swelling, tenderness and soreness in the vaginal area. These side effects are only temporary and should subside a few weeks after surgery. When performed by a board certified and experienced plastic surgeon, labiaplasty does not cause any permanent changes in sensation.
