Your vagina is pretty damn amazing – it has the power to give birth, self-clean and keep you and your partner pretty happy (endorphins anyone?). But there’s still a fair few facts about our vajayjays that might take you by surprise.
The vagina is self-cleaning
Vaginas naturally lubricate in order to stay clean and healthy. After women go through a menstrual cycle its important for a women’s vagina to produce discharge to clear away dead cells and keep it nice and peachy! Expect a half to two teaspoons of discharge per day.
Your vagina may actually change in size and shape during arousal
It’s called “vaginal tenting” and is totally OK. The vagina averages around three to four inches in length, say Högemann and Druet, though it can be more or less. “But during arousal it gets more relaxed and wider,” they add. “The uterus is pulled upward, which changes the position of the cervix, allowing the vagina to become longer,” they say, which ultimately is the readying of the body for intercourse. However, they note that the inner two thirds of the vagina act differently from the outer third: Only the inners lengthen.
After birth, vaginas need a rest
Whether your have a vaginal birth or a C-section, doctors advise women to avoid penetration for six weeks after giving birth, as the vagina needs that time to heal.
They come in all different colors
Labia color can range from light pink to dark brown. During sexual arousal, the color of your labia can temporarily deepen as blood rushes to the area.
Your vagina does change, especially after childbirth
“The cervical opening may change slightly in appearance—from a dot to more of a curve—but it is still closed and fulfills the same purpose,” Druet and Högemann say. While vaginal tissue stretches during labor, it should return to its same size without much intervention.
Sex keeps your vaj healthy
Having sex can prevent your vagina from drying out! Also having healthy sex is one of the very good physical exercises to strengthen the vaginal muscles. So that people who have not had sex for a long time will have a painful intercourse.
Vaginal muscles can be strengthened
One of the most interesting things to know is that vaginal muscles can be strengthened by regular pelvic exercises. These exercises reduce the risk of problems such as uterus loss or urinary incontinence. In fact, 30% of women develop these disorders after menopause.
Clitoris is a very sensitive area of the vagina
According to researches there are 8,000 nerve endings in the clitoris, dedicated exclusively to female pleasure. The penis only has 4,000.
